In The Hands Of Someone Else

Image your teacher letting you have three weeks to do any type of project that you want to do with anyone, you could write a book with a group of friends or by yourself, create a comic book or even just think of something original that you thought of on your own... the possibilities is endless, the choice is up to you. You are creating your own 20% project. This is something that is really fun and i think that we should do something like this more often .

For my 20% project i chose to do it with two of my friends, Macie and Sam. After discussing many different things that we could do for our project we decided that we going to make a children's book that incorporated both bullying and taking something that doesn't belong to you. Also we decided that we were going to put it on an app on the ipad and record our own voices reading the story. Last but not least we decided that we were going to make puppets that would go with the story and perform a puppet show to go with the book.

First we came up with characters, setting, solution, and problem for the book, we decided that we were going to use a mouse a a main character and he was going to lose his favorite car at the park and some monster brothers were going to find it and meet up with Josh (main mouse) and they were going to bully josh and not give him back his car. But then all of the sudden Josh’s friend sees what is happening and goes and scares the monsters away, but before Josh knew what happened harry (Josh’s friend) ran away and Josh never Knew what happened.

When we were done writing the book it was time to illustrate it although it took longer then all of us had once thought. Since we figured out that we weren’t going to have enough class time to draw we decided to go to one of the group members house and we finished the book, and when we got back to the school we had someone laminate it then we punched holes into it and put rings through it. Also that day we took pictures with the ipad and record our voices reading it to make a digital copy of the book.

Last but not least it was time to make the puppets as time was almost done we quickly made all the puppets, we made them two sided because that way we could make the puppets face either way depending on what way they needed to face. Also insted of drawing the different scenes on a bunch of different pieces of paper, we just decided that we should make little signs that say what the scene is for example a sign would be held up that say park when they were playing at the park together.

Some of the things that i liked about this project were that you could do whatever you wanted to do and you could do with a group of people or by yourself. Also i liked it because you got so much class time to do whatever you wanted to do. If I could change the project to make it better i would maybe give people a little bit more time, maybe 4 weeks because even though three weeks seems like a long time to do some of this stuff, which it is once you start doing it then it seems like you need more time and i think that if we had one more week then we most likely would have done a little bit better of a job.

Those are the different choices that i had to make for my 20% project and all the different things that i created. Also the reasons why i liked the 20% project and what i would change to it to make it better. So next time your teacher is looking for a new project to try suggest the 20% project.

  5. Taylor, good overview of the process of creating your final product. I like that you described that you did intend for a "character values" message to be included in your story. I think it is important to point out some of these kinds of decisions, so that people who see the book afterwards can have a deeper understanding of the process. I read that you might have preferred to have more time to complete the project, and it is difficult sometimes to apply the same due date to so many vastly different projects. I appreciate that your group made some decisions to ensure that it was complete by the due date, and unfortunately, this is more like real life, where we sometimes have to make tough decisions about things that we have to give up. Overall, a very thoughtful post. Well done, MrB
